October arrives amidst a warm spell although signs of fall abound. On a recent walk I noticed that distinctive smell of dried leaves for the first time this year and found myself stepping on lots of fallen acorns. Very few trees have begun to show hints of changing colors although I'm sure that'll change over the next week as we're supposed to return to more average temperatures.
Our next door neighbors, Josh and Breanna, had us over for dinner the other night. It's nice enough right now to still eat outside so we dined on their backyard deck. The sun's setting just before 7:00 now which is, I believe, about an hour later than it was just a month ago. They had a fire going outside and their kids, Bran and Ada, made s'mores after dinner.
I'm taking the year off from teaching which is a break that I really need. Over the summer Dale and I tended to yard work as far as weeding and keeping the grass mowed, although minimally so. I didn't get to planting flowers over the summer like I usually do so now I'm taking advantage of not working and really devoting some time and attention to the yard.
...although about six stalks of it which were planted over by the driveway were stolen!
Took a walk this morning. Coolish put pleasant. A light track jacket was just right. Supposed to get up to 80 today.
Cigar in the backyard this afternoon while Dale went off to climb with Josh from next door. Ada came over to visit. She actually snuck up behind me while I was sitting and said, BOO!" It rather quite startled me. Breanna asked if I wanted any of the herbs she's been growing. I picked sage and rosemary.
Ada brought them over to me in a nice bouquet.
Halloween was on broadcast tv tonight so Dale and I watched it during dinner. I've never seen it before. It was all about teens making bad choices and Jamie Lee Curtis screaming a lot. It was actually kind of fun.
