Over the years I've seen most of the old Universal monster movies. This one escaped me until now.
Claude Rains and Gloria Steward star. The British Rains was well known for many roles but The Invisible Man was his American debut and first big break in Hollywood. He went on to many other roles including Captain Renault in Casablanca. Gloria Steward is probably best known, at least to modern audiences, as the 100 year old woman in Titanic. Both Rains and Steward are fantastic here.
Rains plays a scientist who falls into mania after taking the potion to make him invisible. He becomes hell-bent on world domination and is willing to terrorize as many people as possible along the way.
There are a couple of notable Christmas movie connections in this film. Henry Travers who plays Dr. Cranley can also be seen as Clarence Odbody, Jimmy Stewart's guardian angel, in It's a Wonderful Life.
And Una O'Conner who plays Jenny Hall, the proprietress of the inn, is also known for playing Norah, the housekeeper in Christmas In Connecticut.
