Halloween Season 2019 - The Monster Squad

Saturday, October 12, 2019

Have been aware for a few weeks now that The Monster Squad would be showing today over at the Parkway Theater at 1 p.m. However, my friend Steve wanted to get together for cigars at the same time and I decided to hang with him instead.

We met at Anthony's over on Lake Street and each went for an Asylum 13.

It was good to connect. We haven't seen each other since summer. Big changes on the horizon for both of us. He's moving to a new residence and I've realized that something is going to change work-wise for me which will involve being out of my current job in the next year to year and a half.

Anyway, I convinced Dale to watch The Monster Squad with me over dinner tonight. Bless him for being game. Although the movie dates to 1987 I've only been aware of it for the last few years.

The story involves a bunch of pre-teens obsessed with the old classic monster movie characters.

As it turns out, five of the classic Hollywood monsters arrive in their hometown and, led by Dracula, are out to destroy the world.

Dracula is joined by The Mummy,

The Wolfman,

Gillman, and of course...

Frankenstein's monster (who turns out to be friendly and an ally to the kids).

It was a silly yet likable and highly watchable movie with lots of one-liners.

The film features a couple of Michael Sembello (of Flashdance fame) songs including Rock Until You Drop. It sounds incredibly dated but is very 80s and works well with the film.

By the way, Dale liked it!
