Halloween Season 2018: Skeletons, Spiders, & Cigars

Thursday, October 18, 2018

Dale and I went to the gym this morning. They had this skeleton model on display which I photographed and then photoshopped through a filter app for added effect. Spooky, huh? Actually he's rather friendly looking.

Dale's on vacation starting today and we are loving being off during the daytime. Everything's less crowded including the gym, the grocery store, and even the streets. We went to Kowalski's to get dinner for tonight and I picked up another pumpkin. This one's a little guy (see above).

Gorgeous day for a cigar in the yard. I sat and read from Sy Montgomery's latest book, How to Be a Good Creature, which is a memoir told through the lens of her experiences with 13 animals who have touched her life. One of those animals is Clarabelle, a tarantula. Now, spiders have never been central in Halloween lore but I find them to be a significant part of the periphery in terms of how they can set the mood. They are often represented in decorations and story illustrations. The story of Clarabelle is in no way scary. In fact, it is an incredibly sweet story and sheds light on how fascinating and unique spiders are. One point that Montgomery makes is that no human is born with a fear of arachnids but that society does a very good job of instilling arachnophobia in us from a very early age. In honesty, the story of Clarabelle initially gave me the creepy crawlies. However by the end I had a new appreciation for spiders.
