Halloween 2014 - Dale

What a good sport!

Halloween 2014 - Frankenstein Movies

Gary, Warren, Dale, and I watched House of Frankenstein as trick-or-treaters periodically came to the door. I remember watching this on Mel's Matinee on Channel 11 back in the 1970's when I was about 8 years old. I most remember the part where the gypsy girl who's in love with Lon Cheney/The Wolfman yet fashions a silver bullet to shoot him just in case he turns into the Wolfman and attacks. During dinner we watched Young Frankenstein which is always a hoot.

Halloween 2014 - Halloween Cocktail

Warren and Gary came over tonight in costumes. They went to Savers and picked up some wacky clothes. Gary came as a tie-dye wearing hippie and Warren looked like a cross between a pimp and a snowbird wintering in Florida.  We had cocktails while I passed out candy to trick-or-treaters. After I shut down the house we ordered Chinese.

Halloween 2014 - No Jack O Lantern This Year

I spaced out getting a pumpkin to carve this year. Ran to Kowalski's at about 8:30 p.m. last night only to find they were OUT. Dale went to get snacks for tonight and said they must not have restocked. Settled for using this fake pumpkin we had on hand.

Halloween 2014 - Cowboy Joe with Athena

Posing with Athena in my Halloween costume. I haven't dressed up for Halloween in about 20 years.

Halloween 2014 - Trick or Treaters

Had about 35 trick-or-treaters compared to last year's 55. Gave out about 2/3rds of the 350 pieces of candy.

Halloween 2014 - Candy

This year I bought about 350 pieces of candy.

Halloween 2014 - Pumpkin Pie Cream Liqueur

Had some while setting up for trick-or-treaters.

Halloween Season 2014 - Teeny Tiny and the Witch Woman

Today I showed the video Teeny Tiny and the Witch Woman to my class. I've been showing it around this time of year for the last six years. The kids love it.

Halloween Season 2014 - Mary Jo's Cookie

Mary, a colleague of mine at work, baked some cookies last night and gave me a couple today. I ate the witch but snapped a picture of the moon. Mary and I just discovered that we knew each other as kids and used to pal around the old neighborhood together. She went by Mary Jo back in the day. By the way, Mary Jo makes delicious cookies.

Halloween Season 2014 - Candy

Picked up candy after school today. Stopped by the grocery store to pick up a pumpkin only to find they were OUT!

Halloween Season 2014 - Around the Neighborhood

Neighbor's house up the street.

Halloween Season 2014 - Pumpkin Pie

Dale and I bought our first pumpkin pie slices the other night. Heaven.

Halloween Season 2014 - Candy Corn

Just heard something on one of the local chat shows that candy corn is the least popular Halloween candy. In fact, when surveyed, kids said they'd rather get pencils and erasers in their trick or treat bags than candy corn. Ouch. Funny that it's become such an iconic symbol of the season. The above photo is one I took of a candy dish at Pete's house.

Halloween Season 2014 - Cowboy Joe

My cowboy persona. This is probably the closet I'll get to a costume. The hat belongs to my brother Pete.

Visiting Pete - The Pumpkin Patch

So long, Pumpkin Junction Pumpkin Patch. The kids had a blast.

Visiting Pete - The Pumpkin Patch

Visiting Pete - Family Picture

Here we are at the pumpkin patch.

Visiting Pete - Cowboy Joe

Pete let me borrow his cool cowboy hat during our trip to the pumpkin patch. Here I am modeling it in the corn maze.

Visiting Pete - Corn Maze

Xander and I braved the corn maze together. He did really well and lasted a little longer than I wanted to stay (I didn't let on and stuck it out just for him). There were a couple of bridges you could climb inside the maze to get a sense of where you were.

Top photo: The corn maze.
Bottom photo: Pete, Steph, and Mom entering the maze.

Visiting Pete - Barrel Ride

Abby, Xander, and Emma really loved this barrel train at the pumpkin patch. The driver moved the thing along at a pretty quick clip, much more so than the kid trains you see at the shopping mall.

Visiting Pete - Pig Races

The pumpkin patch had, among other things, a corn maze and pig races. Despite goofy names like Lady Hog-ah and Notorious P.I.G., the pigs were pretty cute. They weren't much at racing though. They only seemed to want to move when chased.

Visiting Pete - The Pumpkin Patch

Because Xander had been on a field trip to a pumpkin patch, Pete and Steph thought it would be nice if the girls could have a chance to visit one this year too.

Xander's Pumpkin

Xander had recently taken a field trip to a pumpkin patch with his class at school. He decorated it upon his return.

Visiting Pete - Abby's Jack-O-Lantern Drawings

Abby drew the following for us. The top one was for me and the bottom one was for Dale.

Visiting Pete - Xander's Colorings

Xander colored the following for us. He let Dale and me each pick one.
My choice.

Dale's choice.

Visiting Pete - Oct. 2014

Recently visited Pete and family in Wyoming. There house is all decked out for Halloween and the kids are getting excited.

Halloween Season 2014 - Micky Mouse: The Mad Doctor (1933)

Found a clip of this cartoon on Tumblr today. When I clicked on the image I was bumped to youtube where I watched the whole thing. It involves Micky trying to rescue Pluto from the lair of a mad doctor. According to Wikipedia: "The short's horror overtones made it unusual for a Micky Mouse cartoon. Some theaters refused to show it, believing it to be too scary for kids. At one time, for this reason, it was banned entirely in the United Kingdom."

Signs of the Season

Found this on a neighbor's boulevard while walking to school this morning.

Good for a Laugh

While shopping yesterday, Dale and I found this car sign in a parked car. Where did we find this? Uptown. Where else?

Son of Frankenstein

Cool publicity still from Son of Frankenstein.

Son of Frankenstein

Watched Son of Frankenstein (1939) today. I saw Young Frankenstein way before seeing the original movie and the sequels. Much of the parody in Young Frankenstein comes from this well done movie. I particularly enjoyed the set design which looks like a combination of Art Deco and German Expressionism. According to Wikipedia, the film was to be shot in color but this idea was abandoned when the monster's makeup didn't photograph well.

Halloween Blizzard of 1991

Found this floating around Facebook yesterday. Of course I remember. How could I forget?
